A young entrepreneur named Gavin Newsom saw an opportunity to create a wine-buying experience that was more approachable and less intimidating than what he had experienced as a 26-year old who was passionate about wine. In 1992 PlumpJack Wines was established in the bustling Cow Hollow/Marina neighborhood on Fillmore and Greenwich Streets.
"PlumpJack is about demystifying the wine buying experience and removing the intimidation factor, two elements that were in short supply in the wine world in 1992 when the store opened. Suddenly there was a place where consumers could learn about wines in a friendly, helpful atmosphere, where they could feel free to ask questions, where the selection was large and the prices fair, and where -- in homage to the store's Shakespearean namesake -- wine was once more associated with the spirit of fun and adventure. Slowly we're seeing others in the business take our lead because they realize that that's what the consumer wants," says Newsom.
Twenty years later, PlumpJack Wine & Spirits on Fillmore is thriving and still living the philosophy that was put in place in its infancy. This location specializes in a diverse collection of wines from around the world, carefully chosen by wine and spirits buyer, Paul Birman, who tastes several wines every Wednesday to ensure that his customers are getting the very best at reasonable pricing. Additionally, the Fillmore location also sells spirits, sake and a collection of very rare library wines for the discerning buyer and collector.
Noe Valley Location
After the success of the first PlumpJack Wine & Spirits located in the Cow Hollow/Marina neighborhood, the PlumpJack Group expanded into another popular San Francisco neighborhood with a second wine store. Established in May of 2001, PlumpJack Wine & Spirits Store in Noe Valley is a neighborhood institution, where a loyal following of locals stop in for their wine, spirits and craft beer purchases. The location has been home to a wine shop since the repeal of Prohibition. Since then PlumpJack Wine & Spirits Noe Valley has become a must-visit for lovers of fine liquid libations.
General Manager and buyer Josh Thinnes takes great pride in sourcing an exciting assortment of wines, spirits and craft beers. You’ll find the largest selection of Belgian Ales and microbrews on the shelves and in the cooler, along with vintage Ports and Madeiras dating back to the early 1900s, unusual artisan spirits and liqueurs from small producers around the world including an American Whiskey collection that rivals any wine and spirits store in San Francisco and beyond, plus more than 100 Single Malt Scotches.
